  1. Printing visual chart to pdf

Terry, I tried following Robin’s steps and think they may have been written for an earlier version of Windows, as I am unable to replicate them in Win11. I searched online and found directions for changing printing preferences that involved creating a new form with customizable dimensions, but when I went back to print the chart to pdf the new, custom form was not listed ( I had saved it and it does appear when I go back into printer settings). Frustrating, as I remember working my way through this a few years back and remember the solution was getting to a point where I could edit the print to pdf dimensions to accommodate the actual chart dimensions, but can’t accomplish it now. Would be nice if Microsoft would just let you edit dimensions at the point of printing. I’m sure Ancestry Printing will work though. Ed

Thanks Terry, I’ll try Robin’s solution, and it’s nice to know about ancestryprinting as an alternative. Ed
  3. I posted about this in 2019 and I'm back again. I was able at that time to create a wide printable descendant chart and get it printed at a printing service. I've reviewed what worked as a solution at that time, but I've since changed laptops (was running a Mac with Parallels and am now on a Win11 machine). I've created a chart in TMG9 using its visual cart function. The problem last time was changing the settings in the Microsoft print to pdf printer so that it would print the entire chart as a single page pdf, reading the chart dimensions in TMG and then changing the pdf printer settings to accommodate that size page. All this so that I could take the chart to a printing service and have it printed as a wide chart. I've read online posts suggesting I could go to >printer settings>manage, but can't find any such option on my machine. Am I missing a simple solution? Ed Dunscombe
  4. Backup error

I have two projects, both with external exhibits. On the smaller one the backup runs fine. On the larger one, I get an error message "OLE exception error. Exception code c0000005. OLE object may be corrupt." I ran maintenance and seven errors were found and corrected. One exhibit file was found missing and I deleted it. Ran the backup again and the same problem occurred. Both times if I click "Ignore" after the error message it tells me the backup is complete, but it doesn't even create the file. I then ran the backup again but unchecked the "External Exhibits" checkbox under "Project Items" and the backup immediately runs fine, no error messages. My exhibit folder is in the default path. I want to store my backups and exhibits remotely in case my computer ever fails. I think I can just store the backup file remotely, then also save the exhibit folder remotely. That way if my computer crashes, or if I ever have to restore to a new computer, I can just make sure the exhibit folder is in the correct path. Is that correct? I'm also wondering why the error is occurring.
  5. Chart printing (vcf to pdf)

Aha! I think I have a solution. I came upon this earlier post from Robin that seems to have worked. He was addressing a user who wanted to group several pages into one large chart. That wasn't my problem, but the basic idea worked for me (getting my wide chart produced as a single-page pdf that can be printed at a local print shop). I've copied Robin's post below. The key for me was Step 5. Essentially using this to create a blank chart template large enough to accommodate my chart's dimensions. Then just copying and pasting my chart into the new chart template (I was able to ignore the instructions relating to grouping the individual charts since I only had one chart). Ed Posted June 3, 2018 Hi Paul, (1) Make your default printer a PDF pseudo printer. (2) Reboot your computer (3) Open Visual Chart Form with default blank chart (4) File > Printer and check that the selected printer is the PDF one (5) Tools > Diagram > Diagram Measurements and increase the size of the canvas to match or exceed the final combined chart size (6) Save this chart under a new filename (say PDF-CHART) (7) In VCF File > Open your first small chart and use CTRL+A then Tools > Structure > Group to make the whole chart one object (8) In VCF , click the grouped chart, thenCTRL+C to copy the chart to the clipboard (9) In VCF File > Open PDF-CHART, at the top left of where you want the first chart to be roughly located click the mouse (10) that chart should be now visible (11) repeat for other charts making sure that you place each appropriately (it is wise to save save temporary copies of the PDF-CHART) (12) when you are happy that the individual charts are the right place, you an Ungroup them and edit them (13) finally in File > Print look at the PDF Custom Page size and adjust it to a suitable size then close this File > Print (14) reopen File . Print check that your settings have taken and then click PRINT I hope that is sufficient to solve your problem RobinL
  6. Chart printing (vcf to pdf)

Terry, A tip for anyone using Parallels. If you go to "Configure" there are a couple of checkboxes: "Share Mac printer with Windows 10" and "Synchronize default printer." I had to uncheck both of these in order to get Visual Chartform to stop selecting my default Mac printer, even after I had made PDF Creator my default Windows printer (I am running Win10 on my Mac with the Parallels virtual machine software). Until unchecking both those boxes VC continued to try to print to my Mac printer. This, however, has not solved my problem. My chart is 10.5" high by 92.5" wide. I've tried orienting it as both portrait and landscape, and have changed the printer settings on the PDF Creator to "Postscript Custom Page Size" with the above dimensions entered as height and width and then again as width and height respectively. In all instances the resulting pdf is 17 pages, not the single page I need. Frustrating! Ed
  7. Chart printing (vcf to pdf)

Good tip Terry, I’ll give it a try again. I’m even having trouble designating the pdf printer as the default printer, which may be a function of my Mac-Parallels setup. Thanks, Ed
  8. I'm having trouble converting a 10.5 X 92.5 chart to pdf, using a Mac and Parallels with TMG 9 Gold. I've followed the various tips posted, downloaded PDF Creator, and expanded the height and width to the above dimensions. When I print to pdf I always wind up with a multi-page pdf, instead of one large pdf. I've trying to generate a file I can get printed locally and take to relatives in Italy (this weekend!). The pdf seems to be the correct width, but the chart appears as multiple pages. Thanks, Ed Dunscombe
  9. Chart printing

I posted earlier this year about saving then printing a wide chart using a print to pdf option. I received some advice but not to the last query I posted. I'm going to Italy next week to meet many family members I've never met and would love to bring them this chart that shows family on both sides of the Atlantic. I'm running out of time - if I could generate this pdf with no breaks I could print it at a local print shop. Here is the text of my latest query describing my status: "I posted a few weeks ago about chart printing and I'm still having problems. I'm running TMG 9 on a Mac using Parallels and Windows 10. I've created a descendant box chart containing 104 people spanning seven generations. When I go to TOOLS>DIAGRAM>RESIZE I learn the chart is 92.34 inches wide and 10.45 inches tall. I have several options to save the chart as a pdf, but none of these options permit me to adjust the paper to these dimensions. 1. Print to PDF (Mac Desktop) lets me use the Postscript Custom Page Size option to adjust to a maximum of 17W by 36H 2. Microsoft Print to PDF does not let me access Postscript Custom Page Size 3. QPDF Creator lets me use the Postscript Custom Page Size to a maximum of 78.7x by 78.75 4. Wholly Genes PDF Writer v4 does not let me make any adjustments. I'd like to have it printed commercially in a large, single page format. I can save it as a bmp but I understand the finished product would look better if run from a pdf. I've left most of the default chart options as default. What am I doing wrong? Thanks" Ed Dunscombe
  10. Backup problem

I'm using TMG9 on a Mac with Parallels. My Windows10 has been having update problems, so I'd like to create a fresh backup of my project in case Windows crashes. I've never had a problem running backups before, but now I get through all the steps and click on "Finish" and nothing happens. No progress. After a minute or two I get a message that the program is not responding and all I can do at that point is end the program.

  13. Chart printing

Robin, i haven’t used the chart printing function in TMG in years. I believe one used to be able to order a chart through an automated process within TMG, but I’m guessing that’s no longer possible since TMG is no longer supported? I tried it yesterday and it went nowhere. Thanks, Ed
